How to make a rain stick?

Recommended Posts

I have seen people extrude a tube or throw a tall, narrow cylinder, then fire it, usually w/o glaze on the inside. Next you would put leather or fabric on one end and secure it with glue and cord, next you would pour dried beans into the tube and cover the other end. Also you may get better sound if you create ridges on the inside of the tube when forming.

Good Luck!

I have one that was made out of a hollow tube of wood with teeny tiny little finish nails pounded in from the outside. Obviously, that's not a feasible method for clay, but the beans hitting all those little pins made the most beautiful noise.

Totally feasible! :-) People make pieces with metal fired into them all the time.

Get some appropriately heat-resistant metal (either thick wire or nails) and put it into the tube before firing. You can sometimes have issues with clay cracking around metal that doesn't contract at the same rate, so make the holes a little bigger than the metal itself. Or you can add the nails in afterwards and use an epoxy or something like that. But I actually like the look of the fired metal.

You could either put small clay beads inside for the noise, and that way you can have a totally closed form, or you could leave the ends hollow and put in something like beans later.

Clay beads might crack when impacted, obviously.

You could extrude a cylinder as mentioned above. drill multiple 1/8' holes throughout the sidewalls then insert and cement with slip 1/8" extruded clay pieces that would extend beyond the inner wall. They would act like the nails in the above post. Different lengths of 1/8 clay gives different pitches...
