cre8tvthnkr
Being new to ceramics, I would like to know if it is possible to draw with markers on bisque, then painting over the marks with glaze? Any thoughts? What would happen to the marks? Also, how about painting on the bisque with acrylics before painting on the glaze?

Any thoughts? What would happen to the marks? Also, how about painting on the bisque with acrylics before painting on the glaze? It's not only possible to draw with markers on bisque, it's a good idea, but painting acrylics isn't because the glaze would not stick to pot where the acrylics are. Watercolors would work, but I'm assuming you're thinking of using these only as guides for the glaze because, obviously, they will disappear during the firing. You can use underglazes and oxides (ceramic chalk, pensils, etc.) to paint on pots and those will not burn off. Jim
neilestrick
Markers will burn out in the firing. Paints will burn out, but could leave some residual material that affects the glaze. The paint would likely prevent the glaze from adhering during application.

Any thoughts? What would happen to the marks? Also, how about painting on the bisque with acrylics before painting on the glaze? Im out of touch with ceramics for 20 years, but I remember refiring pices I painted with acrylics, they never turned out pure white, but were paintable again. It is not possible to glaze over markers of acrilic paint, it will ruin the peice. Under glaze paint are the only way I know of. The problem is the color you paint on generally changes when you fire it. You peices dont look good until there fired. Spray can "gloss" may be enough but it wont be "glass"
AtomicAxe
If you want to have a drawn design like a marker ... why not just do a toner transfer ... if it's low fire just do a marker drawing on paper, xerox it, then transfer the toner to the leather hard clay. bisque then clear coat. done. otherwise, if you want a marker type of effect you could use slip in a sponge pen http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-UNIVERSAL-ENVELOPE-MOISTENERS-LETTER-SEALER-BOTTLE-PENCIL-STYLE-SPONGE-TIP-/330857970021 ... and draw on it like it's a fat marker. Newbiewithkids
Hello. What about regular pastels or chalks? I am going to be doing some experimenting with kids and I cannot afford to play with the big boys this summer. Thanks in advance. SG
