Anyone Have A Really Old Creative Industries Model Mp Wheel?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm the proud owner of a new, very old Creative Industries Model MP potter's wheel - my first! I've been renovating it (new wheelhead, removing rust, repainting...) and will eventually need to replace a badly rusted foot pedal.

My question is: does anyone out there have an original owner's manual for these wheels? I'd really love to have a copy, and will happily pay for it!

Thanks, everyone - I look forward to participating in more discussions here!

I have an old Creative Industries MP wheel... must've bought around 1986 or so... direct from their factory... I drove down from L.A. and went and picked it up in El Cajon. I don't recall it even coming with an owner's manual back then, if it did... I don't have it anymore. I know that when I bought it Kenton Oakes had just recently purchased the company from the original owner, and they were just beginning to get their feet wet in the business. Recently, late last year I believe... Kenton sold the company to "Speedball" and they make the wheels now. I don't know what their customer service is like yet, but I suppose it will be interesting to see going forward. Have you tried contacting them yet? Sorry I couldn't be more help... good luck refurbishing your wheel.

I have one but of course I still use it and want to keep the manual. But I understand how nice it is to have a manual. I could scan it and mail it to you if you cannot find another. It would take me a while to find mine and scan and mail. but let me know if you don't find one soon.

Hi Donn,

Thanks so much! I have been looking around for awhile, and was even in touch with the man who used to be the technician for Creative Industries. Unfortunately, not even he had an original owner's manual in his old files.

I doubt that I'll find anyone else anytime soon who will have one of these, so I would love to get a scanned copy from you. As I said, I'll be happy to pay for it - perhaps if you want to do it as an EBay sale, or however you prefer. Why don't you let me know, whenever you do find the manual, and we can make arrangements at your convenience. I can receive it by mail or email, whichever is easiest for you.

Really grateful for this - I look forward to hearing back when you locate your manual.

Take care,

Mickey

Hi Ken,

I have been trolling the web since I purchased this wheel, and knew a little about the history of CI. I even managed to get in touch with one of their original techs (see my reply to Donn...). Hopefully, if I don't hear of any other sources, Donn will locate his copy and I'll be lucky to get a copy of it!

Thanks for your information!

Hi Donn,

I still have found no one else with a Creative Industries potter's wheel owner's manual. Have you by any chance found yours yet? Whenever you do find it, I would still love to get a copy of it.

Thanks again!

I have a CI wheel from 1975 I did not receive an instruction book with that wheel. I need a splash pan for mine. Any ideas? merrimac fselder@cox.net

I'm curious about what you need an owners manual for... I have the wheel but not a manual. I don't remember ever having one. Do you need parts info?

I'd like to know what they may have recommended in terms of installation, electrical, height adjustment, parts, etc. I know this wheel is supposedly height adjustable, but I just don't see how that would work with the feet on it now, for example.

You should contact Creative Wheels first - they now represent what used to be Creative Industries wheels - click this link Otherwise, I would check with any local sources of pottery wheel repair and sales.

Good luck!

I do have a leaflet that came with my wheel. I don't think the information it contains will be of help to you but if you have access to a fax I can send it to you... just let me know...

Thanks, plattypus! Anything you can provide wil be greatly appreciated. No fax, however - perhaps if you can snap good pictures of it with a camera or cellphone, you can upload and email them? Please let me know if this is possible.

Best regards,

Mickey

Mickey,

I feel doubtful about the quality of those images... how about the good ol' regular mail? I can photocopy it and send it to you if you want to give me your mailing address... That would probably be the best all around. I have a copier in my house.

Thanks, plattypus! That's very generous of you to offer mailing it to me. I can send you a pre-stamped envelope if you tell me how many ounces the final brochure weighs - that way, you're only out a few sheets of copy paper and a scrap of toner!

Very best,

Mickey

No worries... it's only 4 sheets of paper and probably 1 stamp. I can send it asap. Just don't know if it is going to do anything for you... just tell me where and it will be on it's way in a day or so...I am in NJ.. not sure how many days to get to California..

Hi Plattypus,

thanks so much!!:lol: I just got the manual copy in the mail, and it's great - has a lot of information I would never have expected, including some options the wheel had at the time that I'm going to look into trying now. You even did a color copy - I can see how it had that totally seventies, brown-on-brown color scheme. :)

You get a gold star for going above and beyond the call of duty!

Take care,

Mickey

Is there a chance I could get a copy of this manual? I've had mine for almost 20 years, and there's no chance I'm going to find mine. :-) It's been running like a champ, but the pedal is starting to lose some stiffness. Starts to wander out of speed, so I have to put some rubber bands near the base to keep it from rushing full tilt. Thanks in advance. I'll pay for postage, or if you could email it to me, that would be great as well.

Kanokohata,

I am a repair technician, and have been for 16 years. I have worked on quite a few CI wheels, and recently ran into a couple of clients that have them (MPs and HPs). I did some research with Speedball, and the parts are simply not available. Speedball abandoned that line of wheels when they purchased the wheel division of Creative Industries in favor of the BOSS series which use a completely different control set (parts are not interchangeable).

Your best bet for parts is to keep an eye out for other used JR, MP, or HP wheels. Pick them up for a song and take them apart. Salvage whatever you can off of them and toss the rest.

The wiring diagrams for the 3 leg plastic models can be found on the inside of the circuit board cover. As far as the older 4-legged square models...unless you know someone who understands motor controller design and can make a PCB, forget it. Once its controller is broken, its gone.

Just be REALLY careful of that big blue capacitor under the belt guard. They can hold a charge for a VERY long time and can bite you if you aren't careful.

Hello,

I just bought a broken down Creative Industries Model MP from a friend but it is completely rusted over, blown fuse, everything wrong that could be wrong. Currently my husband and I are trying to rebuild the wheel and I found this link you started about finding the manual and I was wondering if there was any way you could spare a copy? I could mail a pre-stamped envelope to you or what ever is necessary. It would be really great, hope to hear from you!

Thank you so much!

Wow! That was a year ago already... I think I still have it if you think it would be of use. It doesn't say a whole lot. I don't know if it helped Mickey or not. Let me know, Tracey

Hello, I ran across this when tying to research the wheel that I have recently obtained. Its a Creative Industries MP model. I have what appears to be, all of the original information/literature that must have come with it when it was new.

I have the following:

* A folding 2 page booklet with a photo of a bearded man on the front sitting in front of, and using, the pottery wheel. Above his photo it says Creative industries, variable speed electric potters wheel.

Inside there are descriptions of the product, more photos of various bearded men, throwing on the wheel, etc along with information such as , Function, Convenience O Structure, individual adaptability of the wheel, info on the build of the wheel, and on the build and strength of the motor, info on all of the models that were offered, options, Information on the warranty info, Information on the head torque and strength of each model, horsepower of each model, as well as the amount of weight that each model can center, etc... This pamphlet has 3 pages of information.

*A 2 page pamphlet titled: Owners Manual for Creative Industries Model HP and MP Wheels. This contains 2 printed pages w/out photos. With paragraphs on Motor, Control Box, Foot petal, Grounded Power Source Very Heavy Loads, Belts, Bearing Service, and Motor Brushes.

* one half page size Page with a diagram of the wheel. this is tittles Install Splash Guard As Shown Below.

*One half page size page with a diagram of the Wheel Head. Titled: Glide Installation and Wheel Head Adjustment

If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of any or all of these just let me know....

Take care..

I am wanting to pick one up as a spare, for a $100 or so. Also, sounds like SpeedBall took over making the Creative Industries wheels. GOOD LUck
