Chandra DeBuse Workshop / May 4 & 5 / Baltimore Clayworks

WS02 - Beyond Flat - Playing with Form and Surface

In this two-day workshop, students will learn new ways of working with soft clay using simple and inexpensive materials to design unique and personal forms. Chandra will share techniques used to alter wheel-thrown work and to create multiple parts for building narrative pots. Students will learn to energize the clay surface through imagery and pattern. Chandra will demonstrate techniques for freehand drawing, direct image transfer, underglaze inlay, sgraffito, and the use of slip, wax, and underglaze to create a layered and colorful surface. The workshop will provide a balance between theoretical and technical concerns of communicating a visual message through pottery. Throughout the weekend, Chandra will emphasize the importance of play, as process, in pushing work forward. This workshop will be suitable for beginning to advanced students striving to develop a more cohesive relationship between form and surface in their own work.

Chandra DeBuse currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO. After receiving a degree in psychology, she discovered her love of functional pottery while taking a community wheel throwing class. She was a special student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before receiving her MFA from the University of Florida in 2010. Following her graduate degree, Chandra completed a nine--â€month residency at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL where she taught adult and children’s clay classes. She was resident artist at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN in 2011-2012. Chandra’s pottery incorporates bouncing lines, candy colors, low relief and hand-drawn imagery. She was named an Emerging Artist by NCECA and presented a lecture about her work at the 2012 Seattle conference.
