majolica glaze

By how much shoud I multiply Linda Abuckle's majolica glaze recipie to make a 5 gallon bucket? Here is the recipie.

This glaze contains 65.72% grit which is dense. You can mix 10,000 grams into a 5 gallon bucket.

This is not always true if you are using light fluffy chemicals. But that much grit makes it an easy fit.

I got this fancy glaze batch size reference sticker from glazecal.com when I was at NCECA this past year. I like it because I always forget.

Of course the weight will vary according to what type of materials go in.

 

 

Sticker says:

 

 

"8,000g - 5gal container

3,000g - 2gal container

1,500g - 1gal container

500g - 1 quart container

 

Start with a batch size you know will fit into your container. Gradually increase for each glaze."

I have used Arbuckle's glaze and it fits in

To five gallon buckets because Frit is a dense material.

So do several other majolica glazes using high Frit contents.

Ps. I have been going to NCECA since 1971, served on the board in the 1990s and know for a fact that

This glaze will fit 10,000 grams into a five gallon bucket. This does make a very full bucket but I mixed it for a tile glazing workshop so it was good to have a full bucket.

 

The sticker you are referring to is an OK and just OK rule of thumb with a few exceptions...dense Frits being one of them. On the other extreme, ash glazes or Magnesium carbonate glazes may not fit 6000 grams into a 5 gallon bucket because the material is the opposite of dense. The two other examples are light and fluffy. This changes their mass in a five gallon bucket. this has been discussed on this forum previously.

When preparing the surface , sand any blemish and wash the piece with diluted vinegar and water.

 

After applying the glaze, and after it dries, smooth out any thick spots or pin holes.
