Have you ever made a utilitarian piece to serve one particular food?

Occasionally I have made a pot that turned out to be just perfect for one particular vegetable, fruit, or other food.

It was just the right size, shape, and color. Usually it happened by accident, but I thought

it would be good if I could do it by design!! Have you ever made something that turned out

to enhance the serving of one certain food??? By accident or design??? What size, shape, color??

Not a single piece, but a bowl set, which is red clay, left unglazed on the outside, and dark green glaze on the inside. There is one large bowl, and four roughly 6-oz size small bowls. I decided it was the perfect set to serve one of my favorite dishes: ceviche! (I should make small plates, too, for chips.) I had the set for sale for a while, and then decided to "buy" it and use it myself! (Yes, it is food safe for acid.)

I used to make a dish for baking chicken. It was a low bowl with pouring spout and handle, and a neuclear reactor shaped thing in the center that the chicken fit over. (Like a beer can chicken.) I decorated it with chicken footprints in sort of a dancing pattern and called the thing my "Dancing Chicken" pot. You could fill the center with broth and spices and the flavor went up into the meat. I sold quite a few of those before I got bored with them.

And then there are chip and dip sets. And dog bowls.

And a dish shaped like a fish with a fish carved into the bottom. Guess what that one was for?

Hmmmm starting a list. . .Salsa dishes with ice bottoms, teapots, chalices and patens for communion, dip dishes, honey jars, onion soup ramekins, coffee pots, flagons for wine, deviled egg servers, clustered condiment dishes. These all occurred by design, and during the process the colors were varied, the size and shape varied, and the number of pieces considered successes became a higher percentage the more I made. some of these pieces number in to the thousands, others maybe a few hundred or so.

I have not, but I recently had the reverse at a show. Two Japanese ladies were not able to buy several utilitarian rectangular trays the sell very well for me since they have so many different uses. They wanted them but could not commit to buy untill the decided what food belonged on them. Once they decided that they were asparagus servers, they bought several each. Interesting to listen to their shopping logic. The obviously could have spent the $$$, but a purpose was important before they could.
