Making Handbuilt Chawan (Tea Ceremony Teabowls)

The formal Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu) has had a profound impact on Japanese and world ceramics since the feudal era in Japan. The making of formal teabowls (Chawan) is considered the pinnacle of the art of the potter in Japan.

 

 

 

This five-session class, which is a companion to the “History of Japanese Ceramics†evening lecture series held on the same day, will share two specific hand forming techniques for making Chawan and also explore the desired formal attributes of a Chawan within the context of actual Chanoyu. A discussion of Chanoyu process will be included, and we’ll end our work by sharing matcha (Tea Ceremony tea) out of the bowls we have made in a modified teaching ceremony specific to the goals of the class.

 

 

 

Prerequisite: CER022 (intro to ceramics) or permission of instructor.

Class space for this one is just about gone. I can't over-enroll this type of specialized class easily.... particularly due to the tea ceremony we do at the end...................so if you are interested.... please register now.
