Clay and marble

Recommended Posts

I was recently given several boxes of about 1/2" thick 2" square marble tile samples. Would it be possible to incorporate them with clay in some manner and fire to 03? Also have a number of geode slices that have beautiful crystal formations. Was wondering what would happen if they were fired with clay like specimens in a vase. I don't want to grind the crystals into the clay, but use the thin slices on top of the clay. I'm asking because I don't want to damage my kiln or other pieces I might put into the kiln. Would the marble accept stains or glazes? Could you slip over them? I'm sure I'm not the first person who has wondered if you can use rocks in clay and fire it, Right? I've read of folks using some metals to make studs in their sculptural pieces. So, what do you think?

Rocks are very varied. I had a student raku sandstone rocks with success.

But some can blow up, some can melt depending on composition and temperatures. Make some clay bowls or even covered containers and run tests using small pieces.

You may be able to contain blow ups if they happen.
