Diana Ferreira Posted April 18, 2012 Report Share Posted April 18, 2012 I have been working hard at getting a lot of stuff out of the studio. And as a result lost all traces of my fingerprints today. Had to mix up 5 kg of glaze and been sanding my bisque work. My index and middle finger actually started to bleed today. And I am also Miss No-Nails. Wha Wha Whine if I had the nerve to go into my studio .... avoiding it since it is a wreck of stuff not put away, drying slips, clean stuff stacked all over, dirty stuff on the floor .... of course this office is not much better but it is easier to look at messy paper than crusty clay. TJR Posted April 19, 2012 Report Share Posted April 19, 2012 Nope. I gotta say that it was a good day. I am building a frame for the free laundry sink I wished for and found in the lane. Just as I was about to put the frame together, my mechanic returned my call. I FINALLY took the snow tires off my car today.[Actually,he did] They are on rims so, pretty easy job. Denice Posted April 19, 2012 Report Share Posted April 19, 2012 I haven't worked in my studio since Monday I have been to busy replacing plants that I lost in the heat wave last summer and helping my husband clean up damage from the tornado that went through Wichita last Saturday it got within 3 miles from us. Which isn't very close for a tornado but the winds with it were very strong we had a 12 year old Maple snap in half and the fence between us and our neighbor fell down. It was the neighbors fence but that didn't matter you just dig in clean up and fix what you can when it comes to storm damage. It always amazes me to watch their eyes when I begin to pull sides then playing with them to see how high I can make them. It always amazes me to watch their eyes when I begin to pull sides then playing with them to see how high I can make them. I retired 10 years ago as principal of this school so it was like a homecoming. Demos for Elementary students are an astounding reminder of why we love clay. To see the utter awe on their faces as you take that lump of clay an make a form with and inside space astounds them. I loved doing demos for Elementary and Special Ed students, they had not lost their ability to respond. High School still responds well, but it just isn't cool to show it. Lovely story Giltex. My fingers is still very sensitive, and had to do more sanding of work and mixing up more glaze. But this time i used a credit card. Why I have not done it before, is beyond me. It took less than a 1/4 of the time to sieve the glaze. Tomorrow is my first day off work since the 5th of March. I plan on sleeping till my body aches from laying in bed :-) The first batch of my sushi plates were delivered to the couriers today for the restaurant. The rest is in kilns as we speak. Sunday they will get a final sanding before i pack them up. And another batch of glazing, if the test tile satisfies a client. Enjoy your weekend! You might be able to find finger cots to cover your fingers. They are a rubber finger tip that can be found at times in hardware or drug stores. These may give you some extra padding on the fingers when working. I have to admit that I've had a really good day today. I'm doing a series of art tile panels - three tiles per panel with the image carved out and I've had a lovely day just sitting carving my leatherhard tiles listening to the afternoon play on the radio. Everything went really well - I'm beginning to feel a little guilty now as I'm even starting to enjoy reliving the memory! I used to be a factory RN back in the day (ok, not so many moons ago, lol). and out of desperation to cut down on all the bandages and plasters that we issued the guys I ordered some finger cots. When my team of first aiders came for a meeting, I hauled them out, and told them that I added some of it to their boxes. After a week they were still in the boxes, and all the bandages gone. I queried this, and got told that the guys refused to wear condoms on their fingers! Admittedly, they look like condoms, hehehehe. Took another few weeks to convince someone to put on on a cut finger. The factory worked with steel, and the oils and lubricants they used, used to soil any bandage in seconds. I will look out for them. But in the meantime the credit card works very well as a scraper when mixing it through the sieves. I have 3 different sized sieves, that I got gifted a while back. Today has been a break day from the studio for me. And I loved it. Slept late and spent the rest of the day in my pajamas. I use ribs to put the glaze through the sieves, never thought of doing it barehanded! My friend uses a small nail brush, that seems to get her done, too. I have had a hectic few days, it seems. I must have gone berserk, making things, because I find myself with 3 kiln loads of bisque, waiting to be glazed. There are 2 dozen cups/mugs, but all the rest is kind of random stuff. Plates, and platters, bowls, a bust of 'Albert',(my cat), tall pitchers and 3 sided vases, and boxes I have made using my molds taken from various cemeteries. Some of it is stuff I can just dip and wipe and it is done, but most of it I made with a specific thought to decorating. I am just amazed that I have so much to do at once! LOL, but what fun!?! I completed a concealed handgun class recently. At the end of the course, everyone who passed fills out some forms, has their fingerprints taken and these are then sent to the Department of Public Safety in Austin. A week later I was informed tthat no fingerprints had been submitted with the paperwork. We did them again - this time more carefully. Again - no fingerprints. Finally, someone official accepted the smudges in the little squares as my fingerprints. At last, I was legal. That was when the course instructor jokingly said, "well, if they've ever got a crime and no fingerprints are found, we'll know who did it". At least I think he was joking. And their scanner could not identify me. Well, it did read my left hand, but there were not a lot happening with my right hand. I felt like a criminal. dave the potter Posted April 25, 2012 Report Share Posted April 25, 2012 I have found the best way to work glaze through a sieve is to use a nylon bristle brush(no natural hair brushes).
