Clay and septic tanks

Recommended Posts

I am new to the forum and to the art so please bear with me. I live on an island in the Pacific Northwest, we are a semi rural community, traveling to the mainland by ferry. I am co-owner of small ceramics and glass fusing studio that has been in existance for 10 years. My business partner and I would like to expand our horizons and skills by adding clay to our studio. The community is in full support of the project but we are struggling with the fact that we are on a septic system and need to be mindful of our limited resources and environment. We would greatly appreciate any information you can share regarding clay and the use of septic systems. Is there a special filtering system that we can use, or vendor that we can contact regarding the process that we should be following/installing? We are open to all suggestions.

I had a septic tank at a former home. These other post will show you how to keep the clay out of the tank. I would be more concerned about the glazes and the metal content of the colorents. A septic tank works becouse of the living bacteria in the water. Thats why anti bacterial soaps and bleach, ect. can kill an active septic tank. If a tank is working right and is not contaminated it will go on maintence free for years. If you kill the bacteria that are feasting on the waste with bleach or other poisons ( Maybe to much copper, zinc, magnesium, nickel or almost anything in excess) then there is no one to eat the waste and it will fill up and you will have to get it pumped out. I may be off base here and maybe it is not a concern, but I would try to keep glaze clean up in some type of seperate system, even if it was some type of collection barrel where the water could just evaperate and the glaze waste could be discarded latter. I do not think the chemical content of the clay itself would be a problem, you just do not want to fill your tank with clay. I'm sure there are people who know more about this than I do and maybe they will have a better suggestion. Good luck with your studio. Sounds like a great place. Happy firing Kabe. Are there any bed and breakfast places there?
