Is that what you are talking about, a real shame to lose someone on this forum with so much talent and helpful ideas....I missed the post but someone really seemed to annoy him....pity Trina I have seen the irritation of people about the ratings system, some of the hubris boiling over into posts where it does not belong. When this sort of thing happens it almost becomes spam which we all hate. I do believe that people need to put a positive spin on things, but at the same time constructive criticism is always welcome-at least for me. I would hope that when dealing with people about their art and their knowledge and opinions that there is not such thing as "not personal". No..it isn't in your face.....but it IS THERE just the same and it is NEGATIVE without a doubt. All from folks >>>>HIDING BEHIND THEIR KEYBOARD<<< as you say...which, IMO...is never a good thing for a forum. If the person offering critique doesn't believe in what they say enough to OWN their critique, is it a valid system of criticism in the first place? jus' sayin'..... Honesty is always welcome in this forum, including criticism and disagreement. But please always be respectful. And please only write things that you will stand behind, even if someone disagrees with you. That way, whenever someone disagrees with you, hopefully you won't mind. teardrop, I think you need to understand better how most people use forums. Most people are only here to read, not to post. And confrontation is difficult for most people, in person and online. You really can't expect that everyone who disagrees with you to say so publicly on the forum. It doesn't make them chicken, it makes them normal and civil. The plus/minus buttons are small and anonymous comments. If that makes them invalid to you, then you are free to ignore them. Again, if you are only writing things that you stand behind no matter what, they shouldn't bother you. If it really bothers you, then please accept some responsibility for that. Complaining about the buttons is only deflecting. In every other forum I read, there are a handful of folks who use forums to become "kings in their own minds." They behave very badly, and they can get away with it because there is so little accountability online. And unfortunately, the silent users of those forums don't stick around very long. This forum is refreshingly free of that kind of behavior, and I think that is because of its structure, including the moderators, the plus/minus buttons, the "report" buttons, etc.. If there is something petty out there on this forum let me know what you are talking about, even if it is me. When it comes to art in general we all have opinions some of them educated and some not. But all in all they all fall into the opinion column. No comment should say anything that is personally directed, but sometimes we feel attacked. I am sure I have said comments that some may find offensive at times, but also a grain of salt can be a good idea to embrace. I feel like education is what we should be talking about in this part of the forum so lets stick to that. On a higher level being a person who has been in higher education for over two decades is what I focus on but I still try and chime in on all levels of learning. So, with that said my next post is going to be about our major up coming conference. NCECA is right around the corner. See you there if you are lucky to make it to Seattle! You have always had a positive attitude and I, for one, look forward to your postings. You have been through disasters and triumphs that you have willingly shared with us. We have watched your work and your work area improve, and you've proven yourself a survivor. I went to Randal's posting and added a plus so there isn't any negative red on display. I'm hoping he will come back, and I--among many others--don't understand why he abandoned the forums. I was reading comments on the thread, and don't remember anything that was negative. His work is fantastic, and it's a pity he took offense about something, where I'm sure none was intended. I didn't know we could make comments in the Gallery section. Considering the number of photos posted, there's bound to be some you like and some you don't. That's a subjective like/dislike. Objective comments are hard to come by because we are more moved by our emotions than our brains. Personally, if I were corresponding with another potter--outside the forums--and was asked for an opinion, I'd try to be objective and honest as possible. Within the forums or the gallery venue, making comments is a dicey situation at best. I would NOT make a comment unles specifically asked by another potter, and then not post it on a forum or in the gallery comments. My suggestion is that if you want to take someone to task over a posting, do it on a one-to-one basis (personal email) and identify yourself. I've always considered the forums a place where questions get asked and answered.
