Cracks In Layered Wall Plaques/tiles

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the repost - I realized it belongs in this section.

Hello! I create layered wall plaques (like layed tiles) and I am having serious crack problems. At first, I was only having cracks in these pieces in the glaze kiln, but now I am getting cracks in the bisque kiln as well. I have tried several solutions suggested to me, but the problem still exists. The cracks are in the bottom of the pieces (side touching shelf) and sometimes will come through to the front of the piece. They mainly begin at the top of the piece and go towards the center, but not always. Some cracks are very slight, and some are pretty deep and wide.

Please advise... I have boxes of plaques with cracks and it is very disheartening to loose so many pieces.

Thank you!!

Hello Malena

Might the cracking be due to parts of the tiles sticking to the kiln shelf during firing? Maybe try an extra coating of bat wash on your shelf so the tiles can shrink without encountering any resistance. Your work sounds very interesting ... any pictures?

Kind regards

Christine

Malena, I visited your website and your work is utterly charming. I'm intrigued by the almost black stain (?) that gives dimension to your underglazed (??) finishes. I'm a newbie to underglazes and glazes, and I'm trying to find something that will give me that slightly aged appearance. Would you be willing to share your technique for finishing?

Thanks, Jayne
