phanhuyen
Hi.... Just wanted to throw that out there. Do you turn on your kiln late at night/morning? Just got my electric bill and it wasn't pretty. Thanks!!!
PotterPutter
I start mine at different times. It's a small 2.5 cubic foot kiln and costs less than $3 in electricity to fire. Do you have a large kiln that you fire frequently?
neilestrick
I fire mine overnight because it's more comfortable to be in the studio when it's not on. But some places will give discount rates for off-peak usage. Each firing isn't particularly expensive, but it can add up if you're firing a couple times each week. Chilly
I fire mine overnight, taking advantage of cheap rate electricity. My kiln is in a greenhouse, down the garden, and I now have a digital controller, but when I first had it, I used to set the alarm and get up every couple of hours to check/turn up. curt
May seem obvious, but make sure the end of the firing (last few hundred degrees) takes place during your cheapest electricity period, because that is when the kiln spends the most time with the heating elements on. Takes relatively a lot of juice to get those last degrees versus near the beginning of the firing, when the kiln is going slow and the elements are hardly on at all.
