Explanation of tin / chrome reds required :)

Recommended Posts

Looking at recipes with tin oxide and green chrome oxide that give a raspberry red colour.

Hoping someone could briefly explain how this results in red and if there's anything particular to watch out for if I experiment with this?

Also, what I'm looking for is a translucent or semi-translucent, very, very pale blue that breaks reddish in oxidising kiln at cone 7/8.

having had pink halos on green decorated majolica ware, the white of the maj glaze coming from tin, the green of the decor. coming from chrome it does work! Also subsequent firings of white tin glaze an "pick up' from kiln atmosphere enough chrome to cause blushing...can't recall the name of this effect 'fugitive" comes to mind

Base glaze high in calcium, (look for high whiting/calcium carbonate or wollastonite) no zinc, lowish alumina and apply it fairly thick. Weigh the chrome with a really accurate scale, especially for small test batches, too much and you'll get an ugly green. If you want more of a burgundy red then a little bit of magnesium,  (dolomite, talc, magnesium carb)will push it towards that tone of red.
