This weeks questions come from text in The Art & Craft of Ceramics, Maria Dolors Ros I Frigola , English translation c. 2006, Lark Books

Note from Pres: I have really taken it easy on you this week, and chosen many of the questions due to recent posts on the forum about famous ceramicists. This book that I have often used is full. . Really full of lots of information, techniques and great illustrations.

Answers:

  1. 2. John Ruskin-After the Industrial Revolution. ceramics were mass-produced and lost all artistic value until the Arts and Crafts Movement began in London in 1888. William Morris and John Ruskin proposed a complete reform of the arts in favor of handcrafted pieces; they sought the purest beauty in objects for daily use and rejected technology and new materials. This concept cultivated a taste for hand- made items, and the applied arts once again came to be highly regarded.

  2. 3. Peter Volkous- American Abstract Expressionism guided ceramics through a fairly experimental terrain, thanks to the revolutionary contributions of Peter Volkous. Influenced by European art, he became a leader in avant-garde ceramics and opened up many avenues that several generations of ceramists have continued to explore, including Paul Soldner, John Mason, Robert Arneson, Ken Price, and Bodil Manz.

  3. 4. Plasticity-This is a very complex quality that can be difficult to define. lt is closely connected to the physical and chemical relationships among the particles in the clay, the water, and the among the particles themselves. As a result, it is influenced by the following five factors: Size and shape of clay particles, Electrical attraction, Carbonaceous matter and bacteria, Water, Aging. However, it’s not enough to speak of the plasticity of clays from the chemical view point. There is an easier way to define this characteristic: plasticity is the capacity of clay to absorb water, to be formed without rupturing or cracking, and to retain a shape.

  4. 3. Slip-A slip is generally a liquid clay, which can be applied to a leather-hard or bisque- fired form. The application of white slip also helps brighten up the glazes. ll applied to a leather-hard form, the slip must exhibit the same shrinkage as the clay body.
