kjharris Posted July 22, 2017 Report Share Posted July 22, 2017 Like a lot of folks I took ceramics in High School and loved it but never continued. 12 years later and with the means and desire to return to it, I've started and have been handbuilding for about two months now. I started at my kitchen table and just finish a small corner studio in my garage, it's not pretty but it's plenty for me for now. I've picked up a used speedball and have been watching some of the instruction videos posted in a great thread here. Looking forward to participating here while I continue to practice and learn. My husband has cut me off at half of a 2 car garage... he says I'm not allowed to have any more of it and he is NOT parking his truck outside. Oh and the garage is just for the kilns, shipping and stock storage it doesn't count the studio or extra storage in other rooms. He's just lucky it's a multi story house or he might be sitting on clay boxes to watch tv. Soooo Being a kind and generous wife I agreed to not take over the entire garage, offered to build shelves to help organize it better, and in the process score a few more feet without him realizing it. We took over the garage, the shed, a cellar, and another building that we meant to hold it all. It's what you do. The drive outside the garage is always full of buckets, ect to wash. I'm just glad I live at the end of the road so nobody really notices. Hehe. And kilns...good gracious, we collect kilns like playing cards. Did I say it's an addiction.... And yes, I have outgrown the 1/3 of the shop that I have for the kiln and glazing, the bedroom downstairs which is my studio, I have spread into the spare room for drying pots, and am now in the process of cleaning out and reorganizing in order to not let my clay issue take over the entire house!!! My first studio was a very small folding desk that could me moved out of the way in the garage and a corner for my kiln. Other couples bought a sofa or washing machine when they got married, we bought a used kiln which I still have. Our second house had a small building in the back yard so I used it as a studio. Our third house I worked in a dungeon basement with no natural light. The fourth and final house I designed included a Ceramic studio, proper plumbing, wiring, ventilation and windows. It is even heated and air conditioned, it could be bigger but I think that you can always use more space. As you grow with your ceramics journey some how you manage to get the space you need.
