Fireworks should be visible from our back yard. I am skipping today's parade. The 4th's parade should be more interesting with vintages cars. My neighbor worked on the carburetor on his Model A and hopefully it can make it through the entire length of the parade this year. Its back home after all day street fair-and relax.My wife helps sell at this show with me. I use to put on a fireworks show at the beach when I was a younger after the fair but gave it up when folks got uptight about fire works here in Cal-that was around year 2000. NOM NOM NOM. Happy 4th to all you peoples in the USA. I am not a huge fan of fireworks. They are pretty, but so expensive. I don't mind watching other people shoot them off though. Every time I light a firework I feel like I'm just shooting money that is on fire into the air, but that might be too negative of view for most. Was too tired afterwards to haul a 9 year old to the fireworks at 11 pm, and messing around trying to fight traffic and find parking. Although, the husband DID made some awesome pulled pork for dinner. I'll be drinking beer and waxing pots in the sunshine today, so *sort of* a holiday. We are in the process of selling it after 25 years. It was my wife house when I met her.We are selling to friends. Its part of our plan.I cannot wait to be out of the house business. I bought a watermelon, plan on having a slice or 2 and maybe will walk down to the river to watch the fireworks...but maybe i won't, the mosquitos have been so bad i almost can't bear the thought of being outside after dusk. Pugaboo Posted July 4, 2017 Report Share Posted July 4, 2017 A holiday? For me that means no going anywhere because the town will be packed to the gills. I'll have a nice quiet day working in the studio with the puppy and Pugs for company, plan to finish up the last of the cheese boards and get started on mugs. No going to the fireworks either, though if I go to the 3rd floor I can see them in the distance out the end window. I'm more concerned how the new puppy is going to handle all the people in town, so no walk for her I guess. The fireworks might not be so much fun for her either as she's very sensitive to sounds. If I could find a festival to do I would be doing it, but I'm too far south for any decent outdoor festivals to be happening... I'm taking an umbrella no matter what-its a one day show-set it up at 7 knock it down at 5. Our summers do have an advantage-perfect temps outside for shows. No need to buy fireworks all I have to do is step out side my door, people go crazy with them. We live at the edge of the county and police don't patrol out here. Everyone comes out here to shoot their illegal fireworks, even with medication my dog shakes with fear all night. Posted July 5, 2017 Author Report Share Posted July 5, 2017 Back from show it was 3rd best ever (44 years)-off to friends for dinner then back to bed early -did the show in just under 11.5 hours on the street.Left the house at 6.30am back at 6 pm. oldlady Posted July 5, 2017 Report Share Posted July 5, 2017 had my own private fireworks. burned a huge pile of brush down at the river that has been accumulating for over a year. pile was over 6 feet tall and spread about 10-12 feet wide at the base. a little paper, cardboard and a blower got it started. flames 20 feet into the air settled down to a nice fire. all over in an hour and a half. blower causes sparks that rival any fireworks. guess who needs a good, soapy bath? I think people normally celebrate joyous occasions, not suicide of national proportions. I'm not biting, (not very hard anyway): time and place, etc.etc. ...........and I'm just about discussed out via UK based forums. The fact remains, I voted to not go in in the first place back in the 70s and I've since loathed every twist and turn of the breathtaking corruption in Brussels. LeeU Posted July 5, 2017 Report Share Posted July 5, 2017 The holiday is over, but it was nice and restful until about 10PM, when the fireworks started, sounding like the almost non-stop gunfire in the Bronx in '71 - which was too close for comfort since we were living there at that point. No thanks-no need to revisit. I used to love the 4th when I lived in Manhatten - the city was so quiet you could hear a pin drop (everybody else had boogied out of town to their barbeques). Here in NH I could see some fireworks from my position on the couch, through the windows and over the trees, being set off over Lake Winnisquam, which is not far from me. I will admit the visuals were cool. Today I started a new PT job (retirement without a retirement fund is dangerously lean--I do not recommend it...start saving now, no matter how old you already are or what goodies you have to give up to do so!). Since I had to show up for training at 8 AM (I am a night person), the 4th of July holiday felt like the "last day of freedom", which of course is not so. The good news is that once orientation is done I can work the overnights...suits my sleep disorder just fine LOL. Generally though, I agree with Joseph "...shooting money that is on fire into the air". And then there is the entire debate on the relativity of independence. (Wrote this before reading the "no politics" thing. OK, I'll stop now.) I spent half the holiday snoozing, then doing edge softening (I get razor sharp edges on some of my ripped-rim pieces and have to sand so nobody gerts hurt). Then some glazing. Posted July 5, 2017 Author Report Share Posted July 5, 2017 The show was a good one -shows are funny as they always have their own character-this one I saw people I have not seen since the 70's and early 80's.-since I have been on this corner for most of the 44 past 4th of Julys people come to depend on you being there. I had the usual tons of return customers.More old friends from the old days than I can recall. A few that I had not seen since the 70's as they moved back here to retire (now a common theme here).Its like a memory test. The show was solid for a small one day (the only 1 day show I ever do) 137 customers with an average sale of 29$ sold a few dinnerware sets which was a nice surprise. Now its unload two glaze kilns this afternoon and supply my galleries for the summer tourists. I'm also building inventory for my biggest summer show in a month from now.
