How To Make A Tabletop Fountain?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I want to make a couple of fountains: one for home and one for my classroom. I looked up some tutorials, but was womdering if any of you folks have one you recommend? I want to start easy, and I srill stink at throwing over 4 pounds of clay or so. I have been handbuilding, but am having trouble figuring how to handbuild bowls, an entirely different subject! :)

Edited: wanted to make one like this, maybe thrown. Where do you put the pump? Under the hump?

Thanks!

Nancy

Buy a large metal or plastic bowl  and line it with some newspaper you will probably have to cut some triangles an tape them together.  You want something to keep the clay from sticking.  I would start with a piece of clay patted or rolled in the bottom then start coiling from there.  If you use soft enough clay, you can use large coils quickly blending them into each other.  You don't have put scratch marks or use any water or slip and you will have a strong bowl, once the clay is set up you can flip it out on a turn table and start working on the outside.  You may want to leave the coils as is or smooth them in.  For a lip or foot I try to make a  perfect coil, by then you will need to use scratches and slip to put them on.   Denice

What Denice said. Pay careful attention that the entire bowl dries evenly and if you smooth it with a sponge after it's partly dry, make sure you do both inside and outside at once, I made a nice big bowl using this method and had the top pop off in a ring because I applied too much water to the outside without thinking about the inside...
