I know many more of you have only read the replies, but still been pleased to know others felt much the same way you did. Some of you might have even better ideas for questions you would like to get opinions on. " Why don't they ask ...... ?" Send me any questions or post below you would like to see answered in 2012. I will add them to our list and rotate them in so you can read what others have to say. Did you take an elective in college and suddenly get hooked? Did the next door neighbor, who was a potter, first get your hands dirty? Did you get born into a family of potters? First experience was not good with my professor, but the experience with the clay was beyond words. Took a second class with same prof, and learned more-enough to make me think I could teach it. Little did I know even though it was my first love from there on out. Graduate courses at Penn State with Dontigny, Stephenson, and Gallas helped me along even more. I have the greatest respect for Ron Gallas in this regard as he really gave his time to see what the students in the grad courses were doing. My second love, my wife of 39 years acknowledges the hold the clay has on me, and insists that I work in the shop-especially when I start getting grouchy. Did you "always know" that you were destined to be a potter? best, ..............john When I was a little girl my family went on a trip to South Carolina to visit my grandparents. There was not much to do there and it rained most of the time. One day when the rain stopped, my grandma gave me a small pan, a metal cup and a spoon and sent me outside to play. Well after banging them around for a bit, I sat down on the ground and started scooping up the red stuff off of the wet ground. I placed some of it in the pan and then some of it in the cup. I turned them back out on to the ground one on top of the other. That red stuff was wet and cool and smelled so fresh. It was so much fun. Grandma called to me to come inside the house. I didn't want to stop playing with the red stuff. But it had begun to rain again so I had to come inside. I always recall that day. It was my first time playing in the red stuff.
