Clay Mudcracks When Totally Wet

Recommended Posts

after i grind the anoka sand and let it settle , i pour off a very fine clay , that is in the pan , and its mud cracking when totally whet. its totally covered in water  and is mud cracking .I remembered in my geology studies, that the souix quartzite and the Fondulac sandstone has layers of finer sediment that are mud cracked as well and the geologist say it dried out . but i think this is not true but if the underlaying sediment is hot  it may still mud crack and be totally wet

My guess is that the clay has fines that are slowly forming weak hydrogen bonds and pulling the particles closer together causing shrinkage. This is just a guess though.  Take three pans and mix a little vinegar to one and a little magnesium sulfate to the other. In the third one just use the fine clay.  You should see a difference.

Are you going to use this as a slip?

you are right it is fines very fine , so fine they stay suspended for weeks, so i add viniger and it settles then i put it in a pan and heat it to remove the water. but the glaze that the fines makes is so nice  65 fines 35 wood ash from an old oak tree
