Are there any places I could look for a used wheel? I check eBay, Craigslist, Potter's Attic group on Facebook, and I use the Facebook Marketplace thing.

I need a variable speed and reliable wheel. I can't afford to spend more than 500 dollars.

If you can think of any other places I should look please let me know!!

Hey Mark,

I don't know how many amps off the top of my head, (im at work and the wheel isn't)

but it has a 1/3 Hp motor and I run it off of a standard 15 amp power strip.

Ill get back to you about the amps.

It's a nice little wheel, they say it will center 25 lbs of clay, I don't know about that.

I was considering the Artista but I wasn't sure that it would last as long as something like a shimpo or Brent. I hardly ever throw more than 12lbs at one time so it sounds good as far as that goes.

I would be using it a lot...I also really prefer a foot pedal, but I could go without I suppose.

A couple more places to look, govdeals.com and publicsurplus.com.  The downside to both is that sometimes there is a drought in the items you are looking for.  Other times, there are dozens of results (Usually because a school studio is getting rid of several wheels, kilns, etc.).

Also, the starting prices are reasonable, which is good and bad.  Good because, you can definitely get a deal.  Bad because, everyone else is trying to get a deal too!

Then don't buy an Artista. There are several reasons why you shouldn't that I won't go into. They are good for a low-use portable table top demo wheel but nothing even closely engineered for lots of use. The wheel head uses a brass bushing instead of an actual bearing much like bushings in an automotive starter. That isn't something you want to put under a lot of constant use.

I know many schools that have been using Artista wheels for years without problems.

My personal experience has been to the contrary. I've seen them brand new with a warped plastic pulley from just the factory belt tension. (wheel head end)

I can't imagine anyone serious, much less a school using one (or more) of those things for full time use as they are not designed for that.  They are designed and built within limitations, and perform and last as such. Open one up sometime  (Watch out for the ground wire on the bottom plate though.)  She likes ours but for demos only.

I'm 100 in agreement

Demo only wheel

Only seen these and they are all made for very limited hobby use.

All the low end wheels are just that low end wheels not made to hold up eel over the long run. To many corners taken in the cost cutting manufacturing process.

Sometimes especially with wheels you get what you pay for.

I suggest to the original poster to hold out for a good wheel -at least it will maintain some resale value.

I have no doubt that you will find what you are looking for, it's simply a matter of when. I have seen quite a few around here in the $500 or less range and over the last year it has been slim picking, lately the trend seems to be more than the cost of a new one. The longer you wait the more money you can acquire. Sometimes it's better to save a little more.

oceancity, craigslist is a good resource.  it is worth a long drive to get what you want so perhaps you can try other locations to search for what you want.  depends on how high up the mitten you are. (born in detroit)
