I'm Trying To Figure Out How To Make A Pipe?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to make a pipe for legal smoking. Like the glass pipes, but clay, of course. I cant figure out where to put the hole in the bowel - most look like the hole is on the bottom, but how do you get that attached to a hole coming in from the handle on the side?

I can't tell from pics and the few tutorials were confusing.

Thanks!

Nancy

You might have to make it in multiple pieces. If you're making a "spoon" style pipe, it's probably easiest to do it off the hump.

Try this:

Get a small piece of clay, isolated at the top of the hump. Open middle, as usual. Pull the walls up, and then bring them together to make a hollow egg. Once you have the egg, push down in the middle to depress the top slightly into the rest of the form.

You may need to use a torch or heat gun to keep the right parts of the clay stable, like the rim along the depression, or leave the clay fairly thick at the top.

Done this way, you essentially have the shape of the "bowl." Once it dries, you can poke a hole through the top "bowl," on the side for the air in-take, and another for the mouthpiece which you might also want to throw separate.

I make something a little similar to this, and have pretty good luck doing it this way.

Best of luck~!

So how many holes are in the bowl? I don't have a pipe to look at to figure it out. Thank you!

I make pipes by rolling out a 6 inch piece of clay on the table. Take a long stick or artist paint brush handle and stick it thru the 6" stem by wetting the end of handle, stopping 1/2 inch from end, leave the handle in the clay and take a needle tool and probe the clay til you find the end, then mark it by wallering the marked area out. Then make a bowl in hour hand or rolling out a piece of clay on the table then attach the bowl to the stem...with the bowl attached, remove the handle... allow it to become leather hard, than carve it when it becomes leather hard with a pen knife to get the shape you want. All my pipes have two openings on each end. A pipe isn't something you need to over think!

I followed you until i marked the area and wallered it out? Did you mean hollowed it out? Also, when i make the bowl, and when i attach the bowl to the stem, how/where do I put an opening hole in the bowl?

Thank you!

Lol, you're seriously overthinking this one.

Years ago many people used to come and ask me to make smoking devices for them.  If you want to see some really cool stuff look at John DeFazio's work, a lot of what he makes is a functional bong/waterpipe.

A "simple" pipe doesn't need to be hollow, it simply needs a bowl/depression with a hole in the bottom, leading to an extended tube/bore for the smoke to travel through - think "funnel/beer bong" shape.

If making a hollow "spoon" pipe like the glass one pictured (and what the other guy was making) then yes it needs to be hollow - it's for insulation from the heat. If you look at the pic of the glass one you can see it's a hollow form, with a depression/bowl.  The hole needs to be in the bottom of the bowl and doesn't need to be very large, maybe 1/8" or slightly larger.  The "exit" is the mouthpiece.  The 2nd hole you see coming off the side is called a "carb hole" it allows you to clear the chamber of smoke without drawing through the bowl itself.  The closest thing I can think of that would look really really similar to a spoon pipe is actually a kiln peep/spy plug, it just lacks a few holes.
