Society of Arts and Crafts
Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston is proud to announce Archipomorphic by Tim Ian Mitchell, on exhibit from March 2 to April 8, 2017 Join us on Thursday, April 9 for the opening reception. The Society of Arts and Crafts presents Archipomorphic, sculptural ceramics and study drawings in pencil by Tim Ian Mitchell, inspired by brick and body. Mitchell began this work in 2015 at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts after discovering a group of water-struck brick molds during a residency. Working with fresh, raw-brick castings in repeat, Mitchell altered them one by one and added anatomically abstracted features to make each into an individual, emerging from the rectangular clay volume. During the autumn of 2016 as a resident of C.R.E.T.A. in Rome, he chose to evolve the brick-series further by creating his own mold in dimensions of the classic Golden Section proportion. These clever small works come to life when exhibited together, inviting stories, mythologies, and metaphor. Postcard attached -- save and share! As many of the Ceramics community may know, we recently moved and opened up new galleries in the Seaport District in Boston. Our move was rather monumental, and we're so happy to have tripled our space, including a nimble, multi-purpose room for expanded programming. We've re-branded (as a 120 year old Society must do!) and have a new website as well. Please come see us in our exciting new space when you're in town. We're just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Institute of Contemporary Art, which always has great exhibitions going on. Please reach out!
