When Do You Need A Studio Assistant?

Hi all,

For all the successful potters in the forum who hire/apprentice studio assistant(s):
When did you decide you needed additional help?

What do you pay them, and if not monetary compensation in some tangible way.

Also what do they help you with in the studio?

...and how do you reduce turnover. I'd imagine being a studio assistant is often meant to be temporary.

Thank you!

...much to do around the studio besides the actual creative parts of doing ceramics.

If I had a steady schedule (instead of seasonal) I would bring on an apprentice/assistant.

There is clay prep, kneading and weighing, glazes to mix, and the contiual clean-up to do.

Had I noting but the time to do the creating part, I'd be a much less tired clay worker.

I'd pay the legal minimum wage on up> depending on actual amount of time spent at the studio, and the dedication and age of the assist.

Trade for studio/kiln time would be a bartering chip as well.

Seriously thinking about looking for the right person in the spring.
