Clay Body Recycling

I just recycled some Plainsman H 550 and was planning to use it for a cone 9/10 soda firing. When I was mixing it up before putting back on a bat to dry, I added more kaolin and feldspar - the idea being to make it a bit more like porcelain. It throws very nicely but I wonder if I threw the chemistry off- i.e. not safe to fire at cone 9/10 in a soda kiln?

The EPK will take the heat: good choice for fine particle substitution by the way. Porcelain bodies have 15-20% more flux in the body as compared to stoneware. You have to make a subjective assessment if the feldspar was proportionate or excessive. Testing would be the only way to confirm. Keep a record of what you add so in the future: then you will have a frame of reference.

Ah ha! You caught me! I was trying to ask under the radar. You're supposed to be busy with the holidays & not reading this.....

I made 3 small pitchers out of the 550 recycle with xtra kaolin & feldspar, then about 5 mugs out of H550 recycle/H440 mix.

It isn't much but i'm trying to get to at least half a kiln load, but I might be there even without this stuff.

I have a tiny bit of 440 left - after that its over as the store is closed!
