Clear Glaze

Recommended Posts

You have just asked the #2 most common question in pottery ... with number one being a need for a good Cone 6 clear glaze.

It is a massive question that is very difficult to answer because finding a glaze that fits your clay without crazing, shivering, pin holing is a complicated process.

You might need to refine your question by telling us what clay body you are using and how you want to fire it.

I would highly recommend searching in the FAQ area for past discussions.

Also, on the top left of this page on the green bar there is a link to Ceramic Arts Daily. There you will find lots of information on glazing.

Best wishes!

Like Chris said, it's not that simple. Lot of variables come into play. Here's what I would do: Take any glossy cone 10 glaze that has the surface equalities you like (gossiness, durability, etc), and mix it up without the colorants. If it doesn't melt enough, add Gerstley Borate in 2% increments until you get the desired melt. You'll probably only need 2-4% If it crazes, add equal parts EPK and silica in 3% increments until the crazing stops.
