dhPotter
Cone 6 firing. The bottom shelf is 2 half shelves. There is a downdraft vent. The bottom shelf is 1 inch from the floor. Would the bottom shelf temperature go up if the shelf was 2 or 3 inches from the floor? The cones are cone 6. The 2 touching cones were on top and middle. I had a problem of top shelf not getting to temp, but read about placing a cap shelf in the kiln - it worked. Now to get the bottom adjusted... Rex Johnson
I'd try raising the bottom shelf to 2-3". What shape is the kiln and where is the flue? You'll need some air space faround the flue to pull air/flame, especially if it's under the bottom shelf. Also, leave some space (gap) at least 1/2" between your half shelves and reverse that gap every other shelf stack. Hope that helps.
dhPotter
Thanks, Rex. Sorry, It is an electric kiln. I'm making assumptions you know what I'm doing. I don't know what I'm doing!
Callie Beller Diesel
Slow the firing down a bit, if you can. Those cones are pretty close, maybe it's just a matter of letting it even out a bit.
dhPotter
This is my firing schedule. I was thinking of lowering the 2185 to 2170 and holding for 30 minutes. What do y'all think? Glaze cone 6...Segment Rate F*/HR Temp Hold 1 100 230 30 2 400 1975 0 3 100 2185^ 15 4 9999 1700 0 5 50 1600 60 6 50 1500
Rex Johnson
...yeah, I was gonna say those cones are near perfect. I think a longer soak may help but you are like 50 degrees max between down and bent if that. Still, I don't know what the manual says for the kiln, but 1" off the floor sounds a bit close depending on where the flue is positioned.
neilestrick
1" should be fine. Don't leave a gap between the shelves. Try a soak.,it does wonders for evening things out. 30 minutes might be too long. Start with 10 and see what that gets you. You're close... oldlady
john, do you have one whole shelf? that might solve the problem. if you raise the shelf, notice where the elements will be when you fire. will there be one or two below that raised shelf or will the shelf line up with the element? dhPotter
OldLady, I checked the bottom shelf, 1 inch from floor of kiln, and it was in the middle of an element. I raised the bottom shelf 1 inch to make it a total of a 2 inch rise for the bottom shelf above the floor of the kiln and not be in the middle of an element. Also, put a whole shelf instead of 2 half shelves on the bottom. It worked the cones on the bottom shelf look the same as the cones on the middle and the top shelf. Here is a pic. Foreground is the bottom, then middle, then top cones.
rick.housley@gmail.com
Per Ortons video, the difference in temperature between that angle and all the way down is minuscule. I would consider that a good firing.
