PottaFella
Just read about this glaze by Scarva... "GZ2214 is a cone 9 stoneware glaze developed to react with iron in the clay body. Bodies with a higher iron content will react more readily with the glaze, creating a beautiful reddish brown effect highlighting iron speckles. Bodies with lower iron content will yield a whiter glaze with fewer flecks." It is too expensive for me I think at about £10 per kilo, but I'd like to find an ingredient I could add to my normal glazes that would bring out and exaggerate any iron in the clay. Any suggestions anyone?
Marcia Selsor
Actually, the iron showing from the clay body is a characteristic of reduction firing. yesterday someone was looking for iron spangles to make streaks of iron on a glaze. Magnetite would do that..In the past, like decades ago, people used granular ilmenite in a glaze to add a speckled look. Some added granular manganese but that is mot a good chemical in breathe not to have skin contact. Marcia
neilestrick
That's just a fancy way of saying the glaze will look different on a darker clay than on a whiter clay. All glazes do that for the most part, some more dramatic than others. Looks like your basic oatmeal spodumene glaze. I don't know that there's anything specific you can add to a glaze to make it happen, though. It's just the nature of the glaze.
High Bridge Pottery
I agree about the oatmeal spodumene kinda glaze. Seen a very similar effect with a glaze called Oatmeal white. Will see if I can track down the recipe from the friend who used it.
