AnitaMarie
Hi - I was doing a glaze fire to cone 5 last night, and due to a dumb mistake on my part, the kiln shut off an hour too early. My question is this: can I save these pots by refiring them to the correct temperature? Can I do this without reglazing them? Is it even worth it? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! neilestrick
As long as the glaze didn't crawl, you can refire them with likely success.
AnitaMarie
Ok, great! I'll try it, and let you know how it goes. Thanks for your responses! I noticed that the colors seem "muddier" fired too low...is this generally true, that firing at a higher temperature produces brighter, clearer colors? ( I'm using an electric kiln and Amaco glazes for cone 5&6).
Marcia Selsor
The glazes need to be fired to maturity to produce the effect you want. They are not necessarily brighter, just matured. Marcia
Stephen
An hour is prob a lot depending on ramp speed but check all the pots to make sure you don't drip on your shelves 2nd time around. I hate grinding shelves and the finish work on the piece usually makes it a 2nd.
AscotLady
Was this successful? I have underfired a sculptural piece with matt glaze over underglazing bisqued. Just come out looks like raw white glaze. I would like to refire at the higher correct temperature, I had fired to 1080 C and the glaze should be 1200-1280 C. Appreciate any comments
Min
@AscotLady, if you don't like the way it looks now you really don't have anything to loose by refiring to the correct temperature. If it's a large or thick sculpture I would heat the kiln very slowly, especially through the 530 to 600C range.
AscotLady
Thank you - here is the finished Baby Hippo. (Sorry cannot get the photo to reduce jpeg on my ipad ) Clear matt glaze shiny parts, but as its a sculpture it just adds to the interest. Worked just fine.
