The Only Absolutely True Rule For Potters. Pay Attention To This

Recommended Posts

whatever tool you work hard to get is the one that you will lose.

it will stay lost until the day before the new one arrives via UPS.

Whenever I use a tool it is just for that moment only and then when I am done with it I know for a fact I will never ever need that tool again so I just toss it indiscriminately wherever I happen to be standing and move on to something else important, like looking for the last tool I thought I would never ever need again.

I can always find my needle tool in the water bucket. Ouch! The bendy metal rib hides very easily under clay, pushed just under the splash pan. I did however solve the chamois in the water bucket trick by attaching a fishing bobber to it. I got this idea from here or somewhere else online.

Another absolute truth, if you have a custom order for a pot and just make 1 of it, it will screw up, if you make 2 they will both be perfect. I know this and yet I still go for it (1 oversized butter dish custom order right now, yup just made the 1  )

Min - I agree and am jumping without a net as well, have a rush order for a set of custom inscribed mugs, they need to be in MA. Before the 4th. I have 2 that just need the wording added.... If I screw up it ought to be interesting to see I I can make a few more and fire them 3 times and get them there in time. Why do I do this? I have no idea, caught me in a weak moment or something.

PS. As for lost tools I lose mine all the time while using them, they usually roll or slide under the edge of the banding wheel. Knowing that's where they most likely are doesn't prevent me from crawling around on the floor looking to see if they fell off and rolled under a table. The saying, "if it had been a snake it would have bit me comes to mind!"

I like the green spatula Mudtools for both working and cleaning up. So I got 10 of them.

Cutting wires are nice to have around. I made 10 of them out of fishing line. They break after a few months but another is always around.

I am strangely good at keeping track of my wooden knife and needle tool (again I have 10 just only one that I really love)

I live in a strange world where I can find things. It is confusing.

So, so true.  No ball-point sewing needles, ordered more online, walked back into sewing room, looked into different box and there they were, having jumped to a new home.    Grrrrrrrrrrr.

The old item that you have in the studio for 40 years that you haven't used or needed for the last 30 years... and you throw it out.

The next day.... is the day you need it again.

best,

I feel so much better after reading this!  I thought I was really losing it when I also cannot find the tool I just set down on the table!  Sometimes, I put out only the tools that I am likely to use.  Sometimes, I can find just the right tool that I am looking for.  Sometimes, the tool I am looking for has been tucked into the towel on my knee and I have looked and looked for it  Only found it when I stood up to find the duplicate!!!

John, Here here. I find that the most annoying of all. Get rid of something I haven't used in years then it never fails within days I find I need it. Grrrr Secret is to never throw anything out right? But then I would need a really good inventory system to find it all, and probably wouldn't be able to anyway.

I have a duplicate tool box that I take with me to a class.  In my mess of what passes as a studio I have multiples, again never seem to have enough. I was talking to my son the other day about getting some mudtools and he said don't you have enough tools in that mess.

Sponges, chamois, needle tools, ribs. I know I put it down just there, gone, will be found some time in the future, but for now I need it and can't find it!!!!! Grrr

Well, at least most of the the tools are replaceable with minor dents in the wallet. At least we are not loosing our wheels or kilns. Too bad ceramics has such expensive equipment! One day I want to attempt a piece with no equipment whatsoever. I will find the clay, shape it, and fire it from wood I light with my own two hands! ^_^
