2 more and they are getting better!

Recommended Posts

I posted a few that I made the other day with not much luck. I am almost out of clay so I only threw 2 today but it only took me 1 try each and I learned a lot.

I threw the stem and cup seperate (thanks to everyone on the other post for suggesting it) the stem is hollow and they were very easy to attach and it made it simple throwing them in two pieces.

thanks everyone for your help! the one is 10 inches tall.. little to tall but It was great to be able to do a nice tall stem doing it in two pieces.

wow these are beautiful! You've really refined them so quickly- your dedication amazes me :)

I've never thrown stemmed vessels before, but have seen demonstrations and they were done this way, in 2 parts.

Reading the first link to these I was stumped how you did that in one piece!

cheers, Lyn

thanks lynny for the kind words! Here is a

of youdanxxx on youtube throwing one from one piece of clay. There are a few others as well with good videos showing how to do it in one piece.

I havent posted pictures of anything fired because I do not have a kiln. My best friend has a kiln and has fired a lot of stuff for me but I have really been looking hard lately for my own used kiln. He works and has a life and I hate constantly bothering him with firing my stuff even though he swears he doesnt mind. Once I get a kiln I will show pictures of stuff glazed, cant wait!

Since I started about a year ago I have only used a stoneware clay. I really like the clay and the reason I chose it, in the description says it is suitable for ovenware.

These are nicely done, the stems seem to be more integral to the form. I would suggest that the knurl(bulge, knob) in the stem on the left be higher in the form. These make a great grip point on the narrow stem, but too low and they don't work well. Try grasping it at the knob to see how if feels, you may understand why higher may be better. I've included a sample of an older chalice and paten. The knurl seems to add balance to the lift.

more great advice, thank you! Yes they are a little akward feeling but thats ok, starting to get it anyhow. Once I made them I realized the knurl was to low. The other day I was trying like crazy and to now be on the right path feels great. It was really bothering me how much trouble I was having.

I really like yours, its perfect!

Thanks, but due to the glaze they are actually rejects. Somedays I get it right, some days I don't.

Dan has been one of my fav Youtube throwing clips to follow and learn, but I'd never seen this one! He is amazing, drawing that stem up was precarious.

I've never thrown in stoneware, but when I looked at the goblets up close I saw it had a fine grog through it. Must give it a go.

I've made wiggle wire out of all sorts of springs- very addictive, be warned :)

When I first started playing with clay I didnt have a kiln and they are soooo expensive. I ended up getting a secondhand electric one. It's heaven having one at home, and recently I picked up a beautiful gas kiln in great condition from a community centre that was closing down. So keep your eye out- good luck with the search

cheers, Lyn
