AndreaB
I've been trying to work with a 20kg bag of stoneware with not much success. I've never had a problem with this clay previously and I'm wondering if there is something I'm doing wrong or if there may be a "fault" with it. Despite wedging properly there have been lots of small air pockets which have shown up during throwing and pinching. On the throwing side, this leads to tearing when I'm coning up to center. When I pinch these "holes" are throughout the clay body. I've tried re wedging and using fresh clay (from the same bag) with the same problem. The previous bag didn't seem to have these properties So am I going crazy?
MatthewV
I suspect your bag didn't get vacuumed properly in the pug mill. Roll a little coil and wrap it around a finger. If it cracks, it will be very hard to throw with. Clay that tears easily is usually called "short" and is very hard to work with in any capacity. Wedge it quickly and let it sit for several months if you do not have a vacuum pugger.
neilestrick
Yep, sounds like they had a problem with the vacuum on the pug mill. Wedge and age.
ronfire
Call the supplier and ask them, maybe you are not the only one. I know with the clay I use there is a lot # on the box so it can be tracked.
