Mark C.
Back from big summer art show. Inventory is low again and its sunny -time to make some pots and get them dry NOW in sun This was yesterdays pots today looks about the same. Throw dry trim every day while the drying is great. Fall shows just around the corner.
neilestrick
Yesterday I threw 25 pots around 3:30pm. I had them trimmed and in the kiln to finish drying and bisque at 9pm. Sometimes the fast drying of porcelain is beneficial.
GEP
I've got nothing but humidity! Nothing dries in this weather. Today I pulled out some extra folding tables for more drying space.
Benzine
I dig the altered rims and handles Mea! Things dry pretty well in my basement, even this time of year. We have a dehumidifier running nonstop though.
GEP
Thanks Benzine! I run an air conditioner, but only during the day when I'm down there. I fired a bisque kiln last night which helped a lot. I'll have enough for another bisque load tomorrow (hopefully). Gotta keep it moving.
Mark C.
Get the dehumidifier would help a lot for you even if you have AC
neilestrick
Get the dehumidifier would help a lot for you even if you have AC With a good dehumidifier you may not even need to run the AC.
GEP
A dehumidifier and an AC are the same thing, only the dehumidifier will heat the air again before returning it to the room. No thanks. I think the real difference is that dehumidifiers are typically run 24 hours a day to achieve their goal. My AC has a dehumidify mode, so I've considered doing that, but it seems like a waste of juice. My electric bills are high enough already.
Mark C.
OK on that logic -how about solar panels on the roof to offset those electric bills? Some states have great incentives (ours does not) I like it when our dehumidifer pans catches water as I can see its workin also would a fan moving air on low speed help? even moving moist air could help? GEP
I don't think solar panels are in my future, due to the big shade tree in the front yard. Those are becoming popular in my neighborhood, and I'm jealous. Like I said, firing kilns helps a lot for drying out the room. Yesterday was my first kiln load in almost three weeks, due to an out-of-town show. And it's been especially soupy recently. I'll fire 6 or 7 kiln loads in the next week, things should be drying normally soon.
Rex Johnson
...SO jealous of you northwest potters...I haven't been able to get out in the studio for more than an hour with the weather we're having. Not since July 4th weekend in fact. That and the fires. We had to evacuate when the Sand Fire came to town... Pics tell it all, yeah, that's my outdoor studio folks...climate change anyone? oldlady
mea probably knows that turning a fan on in her basement will make it rain inside. that is what happened to my basement studio in humid weather. the air moves to any metal pipes or whatever and condenses, then drips just like rain. Joseph Fireborn
It's complete opposite for me in GA. In my garage I have had to get a greenhouse wrack to put my pots in. I will probably end up getting another one. Much better results drying like this, and it was nice and slow so no rush. I do put puts out in the sun though a few days after they have dried naturally to finish off the drying.
