How Many People Here Subscribe To Magazines Like Ceramics Monthy, Studio Potter, clay Times, Ceramics Review, New Ceramics?

Recommended Posts

I was curious to know if people here are reading journals from the Ceramics Field? like such magazines like Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, Pottery Making Illustrated, Clay Times or European mags like Ceramics Review, Keramos, Ceramica, Ceramic Arts and Perception, New Ceramics. I was wondering because it seems like perhaps internet resources have replaced these options? just wondering.

I was getting PMI, CM, CT, and like John, dropped Studio Potter.  I have tried switching to digital/online with the magazines, but I am having some trouble accessing them. And I have discovered, I really like holding a magazine.....so I may switch back. I also dropped ACC but only because I was getting Soooooo many magazines.  I would definitely go back to that one.

Going to let PMI go when it comes up in a few years-not enough there for me usually

I dropped clay times many years ago-not enough there for me

Its been sad watching studio potter head off into art theory

Since they do not advertise they could do reviews and such that nobody will touch these edays

Through the years I have always been an avid magazine reader and have had stacks and stacks of old magazines accumulate that I never looked at again but didn't want to get rid of.  PMI was the only clay magazine.  I  decided a few years ago to kick the habit.  I recently subscribed to the online version of Clay Times, but miss the satisfaction of holding it in my hands and riffling pages.  Not sure I will stick with online.

PMI, CM, and Clay Times. I like magazines to hold and read, pull out again months or years later to re-read. Have read some of the others, but have found the 3 of them are best for me. CM used to be more like PMI in the 60's and 70's. Now it is more a mix of tech and aesthetics. PMI, and Clay Times are more of how to, but cause me to think about how I can use what I see there in other ways. A lot of the times I look at functional ware, and try to redesign it to my way of what I thin works best. Most times they fail, but at times it really is a better idea.

I have been thinking about subscribing to a one, I just couldn't decide which one to get. I want more of a technical magazine than just pretty pictures and a lot of processes I will never try nor really want to. Would be nice if there was a magazine focused around cone 6, but I guess that would be too narrow?

I get Pottery Making Illustrated. I signed up for the all access plan so I could go back and read all the old issues, have the option of reading on my iPad AND have an actual magazine to hold if I want. I'm really enjoying reading through the back issues. So much to learn!

I am also trying out Ceramcs Monthly, just the print version at this point. I'm trying to educate myself more on the higher level professional world of ceramics and it seemed a good place to start.

I've never heard of Clay Times or Studio Potter so will have to research them and see if I want to add a 3rd magazine or not.

I used to subscribe to Ceramics Monthly but at this point in time I can no longer budget for any subscriptions, print or digital.  Well, except my Internet service and Netflix, of course. The good news is there is such a wealth of freely-given information, and in so many wonderful formats, online, that I don't think I am missing too much on the personal functional level, given my very modest aspirations.

It is long past the time when I wanted to be the next Jenny Holzer, Don Reitz, and Cezanne, all rolled into one. As such, I have not kept up with late 20th century art history, especially in ceramics, and have limited awareness as to what is happening in clay today, or what is, or will be, meaningful to our evolution as thinking, creative beings.

I haven't subscribed to any magazines for a while, Ceramics Monthly I started taking in the early 70's and took it off and on for the next 30 years when I could afford it.  I have also tried subscriptions to other ceramic magazines such as PMI or Clay Times.  My problem is that when I see new methods or style I want to try it and it pulls me away from my current work.  I did donate most of my old magazines to a nearby high school so they found a good home.   Denice

I used to subscribe to CM, Clay Times & Pottery Making Illustrated, but stopped all of them. We have a wonderful bookstore that carries all publications so I purchase whatever one I like best when I need inspiration.

It's funny when you've tried all the methods you admired most & settle on your own style, & then keep seeing the old methods coming back as new ones. Guess I've been around a long time.
