Firing ^6 Clay To ^5 Functional Use

Recommended Posts

the B mix clay thread here has me wanting to try Laguna #55.

our school studio only fires upto ^5. if they do make it to cone 6 it was due to an accident or malfunction. electric.

they do fire their gas kiln maybe twice a semester only for reduction and they aim for ^5 but i notice it invariably goes to ^6.

I find #55 or any of the other numbered are all ^6 clay bodies.

can i fire #55 to ^5 and still be good for functional ware?

i will have to travel some distance to buy #55 which i would rather not do.

That clay has the following at cone 6:

Avg. Water Absorption 1±%  1.9%

You would have to email them and ask the absorption at cone 5, I don't know why they dont list it, but a simple email might produce the answer. Usually its 2-3% higher, which would put you in the 5% absorption range, which is pretty high for functional ware. I try to shoot below 1% for any functional ware clay.
