Hollow Cast Handles

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have design a small pot with slab like handles for a project at Uni and I plan to use the hollow slip cast method to make it. I was wondering if it was possible to 'fill' in the inevitable hollow handles with slip? Or am I better off casting the handles separately and attaching them after?

Thank you!

After draining, I leave the mould laying with the handle down, and with a syringe/long-handled tea-spoon add more slip to the hollows where the handles are.  It can be time-consuming as you have to top-up a few times.  The same problem (worse?) occurs when slip-casting them separately, it takes forever to fill them completely as the slip dries out faster at the pour holes and then blocks.  Hollow handles are OK, but can sometimes get too hot to handle.

Test the thickness after casting by slicing them along the length.

Hollow handles are ok don't need to be solid.

Careful drying, and slow bisque, air is ok in a sealed pot, but it will need to be fully dry before firing.

Therei s a video on this site where an artist, can't remember her name, demonstrates using hollow handles.
