How To Fire Duncan Brilliant Gold?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give some insight to using and firing Kemper's KG-A Brilliant Gold? The only directions on the back is to fire to cone 019-018. Are there any other special instructions or can I just program my kiln to fire to cone 019 and that's it? No preheat, no holds?

My luster experience is decades old but it has not changed much-they work better on a smooth glazed surface that is clean of all oils from your fingers-so clean the surface with cleaner-luster cleaner.

I would only fire them with a cone that you can see and your program as a back up-lustersn have a tight top range and cones tell you whats going on more than your computer on kiln. buy the cones and use both . Fire slowly as the pots are already glaze fired and tight-no holds just get the cones to the right bend.Do not breath the fumes they give you a wicked headache that you will remember until your an old person

clean your bush in cleaning fluid before applying lusters and just use the same new brush for good only.

Others know more about this than me-but these are basic facts-I have only done a few dozen luster fires in my lifetime and avoid them now.

Duncan's instructions for their Liquid Bright Gold. I would work outside, wear a really good respirator, wash your clothes after plus have a shower, really nasty stinky stuff. (those recommendations from Julia Galloway workshop)

How to use Precious Metals
1. Be sure that the surface of your piece is free of dust, skin oils and lotions OG_400.jpg
to ensure proper adhesion. Wipe surfaces with rubbing alcohol prior to applying
the overglaze (except when used over crackle glazes).
2. Always apply with a brush that is designated solely for use with the Gold to
prevent contamination.
3. Do not stir or shake glaze.
4. Place a small amount of overglaze on a glazed palette. Apply one smooth coat.
Do not let the Gold pool in an area; brush it out smoothly.
5. Correct application should produce a even red tint.
6. Clean brush in Essence and let dry.
7. Overglazed ware can be fired while it is still wet. The kiln must be clean,
well-ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal firing schedule. Do not
touch wet decoration and handle as little as possible until ware is fired to avoid smudging.
8. Stilt and fire the Gold to shelf cone 019-018.

Tips & Techniques
1. The appearance of Gold will vary with the type of glaze over which it is
applied. When applied over a gloss glaze, Gold will be shiny. When applied over
a matte glaze, Gold will be dull.

2. If Gold is accidentally applied on the wrong area, dip a cotton swab in
Essence and wipe off misplaced color.

3. If any areas are missed, go back and touch up before Gold dries.

4. If using a metallic overglaze and Mother of Pearl on the same piece, apply
and fire the metallic overglaze first.

5. For solid coverage with Gold, apply over a grey glaze or a grey underglaze
covered by clear glaze.

Metallic Overglaze Application

1. Apply an overglaze compatible glaze to cone 04 bisque.
2. Fire to cone 06.
3. Do not stir or shake overglaze.
4. Place a small amount of overglaze on a glazed palette; apply one smooth coat.
5. Try to attain an even tint:
6. Do not let metallics pool in an area; brush them out smoothly.
7. Clean brush in Essence and let dry.

TIPS
  1. If overglazes are accidentally applied on the wrong area, dip a cotton swab in Essence and wipe off misplaced color.
  2. 2. If any areas are missed, go back and touch up before the metallic or the luster overglazes dry.
  3. 3. For solid coverage with Premium Gold or Bright Gold, use either a yellow glaze or a yellow underglaze for best results; for solid coverage with White Gold, use a gray glaze or a gray underglaze.
Firing

1. Overglazes dry in about one hour but overglazed ware can be fired while still wet. The kiln must be clean, well-ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal fring schedule.

2. Overglazed items should be stilted for fring: Fire metallics to witness cone 019-018.
