Kye
Hiya. A quick google left me wanting.. Bat pins: What are they generally made of? Will occasionally cleaning them with water, a toothbrush and a dunk in mineral oil help against rushing? Or really, is there some other lubricant that would be better for whatever they are made of? As for the basic wood tools.. I have been cleaning them weekly with a damp cloth and a good soak in mineral oil. Is there anything else preferable? Thanks In Advance. GiselleNo5
Oh, you are so much more diligent than I am. I'm sure your tools will last forever.
oldlady
kye, clean your wood tools when you use them. not wet cloth but a damp terrycloth towel will keep them looking good. have never oiled my tools and some date to 1972. my bat pins have never rusted. i think they are aluminum. MatthewV
Good bat pins are stainless steel. They might fuse to the wheelhead if left in forever. If you have to remove them frequently oil them when needed. Tools: I put linseed oil on all my wooden tools. They feel nicer to hold when oiled. After that, just water to clean on a daily basis. Mark C.
I have some wood tools for over 4 decades-never oiled them-oil is a good idea Bat pins-never had an issue with them but I do not do anything except drop them in when needed-never use a nut or wing nut on them-just leave them loose and they pop out when doing most of my throwing on wheel head and clay pads and plaster bats. Oil is good for metal -never oiled my bat pins
perkolator
Wow, yeah your stuff's gonna last decades! Bat pins are easy enough to wire brush off when they get left to rust in a bucket of water, lol. Mine are just standard allen bolts. ACE hardware sells replacements for like $2 a complete set with wing nuts. Wood tools and stuff, I've never seen any issue other than when you leave them sitting in water for extended periods of time. Even then just dry them out, maybe a quick sand and they're good to go. S. Dean
My bat pins and wing nuts are made from stainless steel, so no worries about rusting at all. Available in the specialty hardware section of Lowes.
Diz
Ace may not know what 'bat pins' are - but if you ask for 1/4" 'cap screws' they will have a box with many lengths to choose from. I did find the stainless pins at Lowe's. Depending on the store you can buy individual pins or you may have to buy a package containing several. Not expensive and they last forever.
