Throwing With Essential Tremor

Recommended Posts

A couple of years ago I noticed the tremor in my left hand seemed to be getting worse, and I went to see a specialist.  He diagnosed essential tremor which is an inherited condition.  I have always had somewhat shaky hands, and I remember my dad did the same.  We, the doctor and I, are trying several meds trying to find a good fit to control the problem which he says can be controlled. But right now it is interesting to throw sometimes.  I can't throw tall, over about 10" because the left hand just looses control, and I have developed some strange cross hand wraps to lock my hands together for control.  I'm hoping we find a med that really works cause I enjoy my work in pottery.  Just wondering, though, if anyone else is working through this problem.

I have not been diagnosed with anything like what you have. However, sometimes, and it is when pulling something tall, my right hand will start shaking back and forth. I stop pulling and shake my hand out a little bit, rub it some and get back to pulling. I does not happen all the time, just occasionally. Sometimes I think it is caused from being old and muscle fatigue setting in - I hope. Kinda makes you wonder how much longer you can do pottery before it gets crazy.

Have you been here? http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/centers_clinics/movement_disorders/conditions/essential_tremor.html

Because the tremor is often worse if your hands are higher than your elbow, changing the position of your chair higher (without hurting your back:) ) might help, as well as light weights on your wrists.

Good luck with your health care providers.
