Marcia Selsor Posted January 24, 2016 Report Share Posted January 24, 2016 I needed to replace my barrel kiln. The it was corroding seriously after much use. My friend also needed a new raku kiln. This is my smaller kiln but her larger one. The final dimensions inside are 21 x 25". They are lined with 1" 8# density ceramic fiber. The total cost for each kiln was $256. Sodium silicate was used to attach the fiber to the metal and the seam was secured with buttons. The lid has 8 buttons.I still need to spray it to seal the fibers. I had the welder make a burner support. The burner port is 4" dis. and the hole in the lid is 5". This was reduced from my old one which was about 7" and was too large. I will still build a smaller kiln using steel flashing. My flashing was used for an emergency fix on my grapefruit trees to keep the rats away from the great. I still plan to make a smaller kiln using steel flashing but my flashing got used for emergency protection of my grapefruit trees under attack from citrus rats.I wrapped the trunk and branches as well as pruning away from a fence they used for access. There are also handles on the lid and I also had a tile rack basket made to fire 5 10" x 10" tiles in one shot. Always room for improvements.
