Rebekah Krieger
Can anybody suggest a good clay body that would be great for wood firing made by laguna or standard? I would like to order some porcelain and some stoneware. I am participating in a wood firing this spring and was asked to use a non grolleg body. I get to fill 20 square feet of my pots. Guest JBaymore
I can tell you a Laguna body NOT to use. Miller 900. That is the stock all-purpose body that our ceramic department uses. Works fine for general handbuilt and thrown gas fired stuff. Many of the students use it in the NHIA anagama. It is pretty darn "bland". best, ....................john
neilestrick
Standard 306 is great if you want a darker body. I've had some really nice pieces with it. They also have 3 bodies made for wood fire- 437, 508, 621. I don't know if the Evanston store stocks them, though, but they can usually get them in quickly. They usually get trucks every 2 weeks or so. Laguna has some bodies for wood, too, like their wood fire B-Mix. Personally, I like browner clays rather than white clays in the wood kiln. Where are you firing?
Tyler Miller
Smokie's Hot Bod is the PSH standard. Tony Clennell helped formulate it, I think. There's a Wood-salt version as well, too. I realize this may not be helpful for you in the US, Rebekah, but I've always been a big fan of PSH's clays and promote them whenever possible. Rebekah Krieger
it needs to be cone 9 or higher too. I am firing at simon levin's kiln this spring.
rayaldridge
The porcelain I fire at 8, Standard's 130, does well woodfired, in my opinion, but bear in mind I am not a lover of brown pots. It held up fine to Cone 11-12 in a communal groundhog firing, but it does turn light grey in reduction. John B. would probably regard it as extremely bland. Unfortunately, I think that it has been discontinued. I still have a ton or so, but when that's gone I'll be sad.

neilestrick
Rebekah- I was in Evanston today and they said they stock the 508 woodfire body, and usually have a couple boxes of the Troy woodfire, too. If you decid you want some let me know and I can get it to my shop to save you some drive time.
