Qotw: Would You Ever Completely Retire From Doing Your Art Work?

Recommended Posts

I already have a couple of "it hurts when I do that" moves in clay, so I just don't do that.  I imagine the things that hurt will increase as I age, but I can't imagine totally losing all capability to work with clay.  That's what it would take to make me stop.

As we age, we all will develop some aches and pains. As most people here know, I am rocking the titanium hip. Had to hand build for a year. Not that hand building was a default choice, I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.

The question about completely stopping, makes me wonder if there is something that John Glick is not saying about his health.

I have a friend, Bob Pike, that developed serious environmental allergies to clay dust and mould. He stopped working in clay entirely, bought himself a plasma cutter and makes art vessels that way now. His wife Connie still does all the clay work.

...............makes me wonder if there is something that John Glick is not saying about his health.

In my experience, I find that people generally do not like talking about their health issues publically.

I personally know 5 studio potters who have diagnosed lung diseases that are very likely work related..... who do not publically acknowledge the fact that they are sick at all.

best,
