clay lover
I was not sure which Forum this Q belonged in, but... I will have 5 days north of LA and south of Carmel next week to tour around. People have suggested Cambria as a good stop. Have you been there? Is it a full days worth of looking and poking? I have been in the nice shop at Ventura Harbor. Do you know of any good craft-pottery sale events or good galleries that I might want to visit ? I don't need to stay on the coast and will be in SLO at least 1 day. I will be there from Dec. 6-11. Thanks, it's always interesting to see what potters on the other coast are doing. 1515art
Cambria is a nice little town, it has some gift shops and a few galleries and restaurants, but not enough to keep you entertained for more than a couple of hours i don't think. next to cambria is moonstone beach, if you are lucky on a low tide sometimes these gems can be found. the area around cambria has a number of wineries you can visit and Hearst Castle is a short drive and worth seeing if you have never been there. a few miles north of cambria the is a wonderful location to check out the sea lions. There is a beautiful restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean just a bit south of Carmel in the big sur area with a large outdoor fire pit, they also have a nice gift shop with lots of local arts and crafts, I can't remember the name of the place, but perhaps someone on here will know the location I'm writing about. oldlady
my drive up the coast was in 2002 so things may have changed considerably. cambria and surrounding areas were filled with pottery back then. Suzy Siegele and Mike Haley, whose work is pictured on page 156 in Robin Hopper's book "Functional Pottery" were just south of town. Oaji was the home of a number of potters and i was lucky enough to visit with Otto Heino. many shops in that famous town and a tile specialist. cannot remember who but the work was similar to the pictorial work of the early 20th century usually found around fireplaces and called art deco in craftsman style houses. whoever you find, have a great time and soak up the atmosphere of the area. don't miss the huge aquarium in Monterey. check out the size of those cod! Mark C.
I have some pots(limited forms) in next town up from Cambria-the place has lots of potters works I'm told-it in a very small place called Harmony-I think the shop is Harmony Pottery-you cannot miss it if you can find the town of Harmony. Santa Barbara used to have the YES store which is artists co op store during the holidays-lots of ceramics-you could google that. As far as Cambria I would check out the Amphora Gallery I have a few potter friends that have work there-its a 6 local potters gallery with lots of clay work. Say Hi to Gary Gall the potter for me.We will miss him in Tempe this weekend. Mark
