Black Friday/shop Small Saturday

Recommended Posts

Well I think the big boxes have finally killed Black Friday.  We had swarms of customers yesterday.  Double 2014's Black Friday sales and literally 5x what I did my first year here.  And most customers remarked they were out shopping "other stores" because they got all the deals online.  No need to stand in line.  Plus with stores like Walmart opening on Thanksgiving Day, the big boxes have removed the urgency to shop on Black Friday.  But a lot of customers like shopping Black Friday, it's a tradition.  And with no need to stand in line for deals, this leaves sales for the smaller stores.

Doing the little promotion of "Shop Small".    Our Main Street Marketing director got ;us a very nice little kit.   Looks festive.  And customers are shopping too.  A constant stream of customers.  It will be a great year for me ... passed last year's sales a month ago and I'm a 4th quarter store.

tomorrow is my working day for the holiday sale in winchester, va.  it is a two day sale and my stuff has been selling today but i do not know what went, what is still there because the other guild members worked today.  it is great to have a big sale with 15 or so potters working the weekend but i sure wonder how well it went today.

including some pictures of yesterday after setting up my space.  we use banquet tables and anything above it is up to the individual potter.  it is apple country so many people use wooden apple crates and rough lumber.  and you can always tell the former art teacher's work.

can't post the pic of the art teacher's because i used one of our wood firing potter and ran out of space.  just practicing posting pics today.

We always try to shop on small business Saturday in our town but missed out this year.  We had ice start falling Thursday night and it just quit this morning, I'll try again later.  The shops that were interviewed said they did pretty well despite the weather.   Denice

could not believe what was not there this afternoon when i arrived.  had to pack up almost all the multiple stands because they were empty.  packed up most of the single stands because they were empty.  the huge basket was down to half and many of the tiny things were spread over all the tables to cover the emptyness.   of the items in the pictures, i brought home the big brown thing, both lovebirds(!) the blue fish, wall pockets and a few of the squares.  evelyne's cats were gone really fast and some lady bought a stack of butter dishes for her employees.  lots of empty boxes that had left here full to bursting. :D

LOVE THE HOLIDAY SALE!  we get to see old customers and friends and all the other potter's new work.

everyone did very well, the dollars will be counted out on tuesday afternoon.  LOVE THE BOOKKEEPING DONE BY SOMEONE ELSE! :D  :P  :D

Oldlady, Love your display stands for your slab work.

The book keeping is like a free lunch...can't complain.

sharon at dirt roads has made her shop a destination.  isn't it an inviting entry?  want to know what the item on top of the picket fence is.  a circle of something.  and love the rabbit next to the steps.  the many handrails and low, wide steps make it a safe trip from the car to the doorway.  or to the really attractive rocking chair next to the door.  i can see grandpa there while all the womenfolk shop inside, going nuts over the jewelry and deciding which color is really the best for their dining table.

small towns have a charm that a big store just cannot match.  and i bet Dirt Roads website has never crashed from too much traffic at once!

one of our potters has never had an ordinary thought in her head.  thought you might enjoy these as much as i do.  i took these after she unpacked the boxes but before she set them out properly.  funny thing, almost everything sold.  now to get her to raise her prices.

That thing is a crown.   Symbolizing that "small businesses are kings".   Just couldn't see me or any employees wearing those .... so, hung it on the fence post :)
