Babs
Was reading through an old Ceramics Arts and there was an article on Alan Webster. his establishing a viable pottery in "The Slaughterhouse, Lawrence Kansas. There was a small photo. of Alan mixing his dry clay in an old bath...... Is Alan Webster still firing pottery. I guess Kansas, you'd be inhaling some dust from the agricultural landscape any way. He was protecting his eyes, or perhaps he always wears glasses, and his hair with the mandatory bandana of the times. This article was a lesson an how to make it work as a production potter without having to work away.

Denice
Babs in the 70's the use of respirators was not mentioned in school and glaze mixing safety was at a all time low. We were told not to eat our lunch in the glazing room, that was our safety tip. Lawrence KS is in a area that is limestone so no crops close by, but we do have a lot of dust it is windy here all the time. We laugh when someone brings up the windy city of Chicago and are unimpressed with Florida's hurricanes until they reach 80 mph. Denice
Babs
Yes, Denice , it was so easy hey? Nice to see from Bciske's link that Alan Webster is still making art. His article, or the article about him showed a very astute person, making the point , like Mea does from time to time, that making a living solely from art is hard work and being aware of income, versus expenditure..prepared for the hardship/sacrifices that this life requires Similar post on the go just now.
