Holding Time To Slightly Increase Temperature With Firing Cone 5 Glaze

Recommended Posts

I have a question on "holding" time with an electric kiln.  One of the glazes I use fires matte at cone 5 and glossy at cone 6.  I would like something just slightly more cone 5.  If I set the kiln for cone 5 and set it hold for an hour at the peak temperature, will I get a slight temperature increase?  hold it for more? less?

If you can, start with 15 or 20 minutes hold. If that is not what you want, add another 15 or 20 minutes on the next firing and repeat until you get the surface you want. Your surface may be more like 5 1/2. And you may have to adjust as your elements and thermocouple get older and less efficient.

An hour soak at a ramp of 108 deg F will bring down cone 6.(2230 F)  A 17 min soak will bring down cone 5 1/2 (2201F) .  So it would be better to try what Neil said and start off at 10 min soak at cone 5 ( 2176 F), which would be about 14 deg F higher than cone 5 down+14= (2201F).
