Surface Treatment In Sculptural Pieces

Is the use of spray paint  vs glaze in a ceramic sculptural piece scoffed upon in the ceramics world?  I can't achieve  the evenness, nor can I maintain the surface detail to the extent which I desire with glaze.  Again, this is a SCULPTURAL piece, in no way intended to be used with any consumables.

Thanks.

Hey I say anything goes in sculpture to get the look you want.  I have added a little gold or silver paint to items. even glue little crystals and stuff on.     A friend of mine had this really cool iron paint that looks like rusty iron. Expensive but great looking.   rakuku

When I was doing portraiture sculpture, I used a old technique of mixing powdered metals into shellac and layering them until it had the look I wanted.  The  primer coat was flat black spray paint and final coat after the shellac dried was paste wax.  Paste wax will turn any paint project into a refined finish, just make sure you follow the instruction on how to apply the wax.  Humidity and temperature seems to make a difference on how fast it dries,  I usually do a test wax on something so I can see how fast I need to work.    Denice

One of the highly respected clay artists at the large community studio near me teaches students to do a variety of finishes on their sculptures including spray on.

I love the mantra of one of my former clay teachers ( who got it from someone else):  "You can lie, cheat, and steal to get the pot (in this case, the piece) you want."

Well, I was going to spray paint parts of some of my Christmas ornaments this year. If the snooty academics make fun of you on the playground, I got your back!

Just admitting you make Christmas Ornaments can get you banished from the "Real" room ...Look at me, all rebel and stuff. Wanting to eat, and live indoors for the winter! Clearly I need to turn in my secret decoder ring and my art club membership.

For more than ten years I supported my studio making Ornaments for Christmas and Souvenirs all year long ... caught a lot of disrespect for doing 'girly' things ... paying bills and keeping the lights on was girly stuff. It got pretty real when imports destroyed the whole market for hand made ornaments!
