Qotw: How Far Would You Travel For A Show/a Workshop/an Exhibition?

Recommended Posts

As some of you already know, I am in Belgium at the moment. At the 17th Chawan Expo in Hemiksem. That’s approx. 400 miles away from my Swiss home.

At the opening ceremony I got to know artists who travelled to Belgium from all over Europe, from Taiwan, or even from Australia. That’s impressive!

So tell us, how far would YOU travel for a show of your work or for an interesting exhibition or event, or for a workshop etc.?

Let's see... solo and group shows and pieces placed in museums in Japan, China, South Korea........ so about as far away from home as I can get.  About literally 1/2 way around the world.  (Haven't circumnavigated yet ;) .)

In fact, headed to People's Republic of China in about 3 1/2 weeks for presenting at a symposium and a show ....with students in tow.

The world has shrunk in the last 20 years.

If I were starting  or building a career, I'd find a way to go to the ends of the earth.

With the parameters of health, finances, resources, certain commitments, ceramics as "hobby" (by scale, not by heart), and not looking to really sell, I'm probably not likely to go anywhere.  I did trundle about 30 miles to put three small pieces in a show titled Friends and Fellow Travelers, honoring the late Gerry Williams. The opportunity to exhibit was a benefit of belonging to the NH Potters Guild, and the show was hosted by the League of NH Craftsmen (not juried). The "how far would you travel" part, for me, had to do with becoming willing to stick my neck out even that far...think turtle LOL.

I think anyone who has the opportunity (and the steam) ought to save up their pennies and take full advantage of any travel to strut your stuff, enjoy/learn from others' work, and experience as much of the world--near or far--as possible.

I have made it to most of my group shows ... I would have loved to attend all, but sometimes life just gets in your face.

I have never had a solo show ... Now that I would go anywhere for!

As to shows I just want to see ... about 6 hours driving ... I've travelled to shows around my state, Virginia, Tennessee and D.C.

NCECA ... I've gone all over the USA for.

Wow...... that is the world's loss.  If anyone deserves that kind of recognition.... it is you Chris.

As for art show where I sell pottery -2400 miles round trip twice a year as well as a shorter 2000 mile show and another 1800 mile show-My van gets about 10,000 miles a year and its is only used for selling pottery (no grocery store or personal uses). Thats down from 20'000 iles just 5 years ago doing far away shows-The furthest was Denver about 5 day round trip of driving 10-12 hours a day. These are work trips-making a living selling ceramics at art shows.

Now for the rest of of your question I once drove 7 hours round trip for a potters council workshop I signed up for. There where only 2 production potters there all the others where hobbists.I did learn a few things so it was good.Mel Jacobson gave me a glaze I still use to this day.

I would not go that far again for that.

Went to NCECA this last year. Before that, went to see John Glick in Chicago at A.R,T.(weekend thing) I think that was in the late 80's. Went to Virginia once on a side trip on vacation because of Salvadore Dali show of jewelry in the Richmond Museum of Fine Arts. Got around to quite a few local conferences and shows of Pennsylvania Art Education Association, mostly in the 80's.

In Canada there is an annual ceramics conference called 1000 Miles Apart that rotates between the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Red Deer College in Alberta and the Alberta College of Art and Design here in Calgary. The rough distance between Red Deer and the U of M is indeed about 1000 miles, but as I was going from Calgary to Winnipeg I only did about 800 odd (1333 km). It's an absolute blast, and I've been privileged to see a lot of great artists present there.

Most of you went far for pottery. I too went very far for NCECA and will do so the next 2 years. That really is worth it!!

Still in Belgium though. Today, tomorrow and Sunday are masterclasses with the Taiwanese guests. Tea ceremony among other interesting things. I am looking forward to it!

I was so happy to meet you there also. The drive to RI was wonderful that time of year, and I hope the drive to KC is the same. I am looking forward to meeting up with some of those I was able to meet in RI and make some new friends adding some personalities to the posters on CAD.

Pres: that is kind of you to say! I am looking forward to see you and a few new friends again in Kansas.

Doris: that would be great to see you in Kansas! There is always a Potters Council reception where we all can meet. I heard that there will be a special one in Kansas due to a Jubilee.... In the New Year I will open up a topic here for all the members who come to Kansas. Stay tuned!
