So over the weekend I started a blog, aimed at promoting the pipes I've been making.  Making stuff that almost no one else is making in clay has its benefits and its hazards.  I feel as though I have a lot of explaining to do, and my experience has been that a blog is a pretty good way to do that.  I've done this before with some success; I designed a little sailboat that was largely a one-of-a-kind deal, and used a blog to promote sales of the plans.  It worked well, but I've never written a blog about clay before.

There isn't a lot there yet, but I'd be grateful for any advice or critiques.

Thanks, Joel.

I've been enjoying making these a lot.  Effigy pipes have a long and illustrious past, here in the colonies, but no one seems to be doing them much any more.

I can't help but wonder if I can get folks to take my versions seriously as art objects.  It will be interesting to see.

My two cents ... I would publish the full posts on that opening page, rather than making visitors click once more to get a full post. I visited your site a few times before I clicked on one of your posts, because the first impression I got was "I don't time for an extra click right now, I'll have to come back later." At least publish the full post of the most recent post, then ask readers to click for the older posts.

Also, I would edit your photos more selectively, they seem a little repetitive. One or two photos per post will have the most impact.

I agree with Mea about showing the newest post in full.

As a potter, I enjoyed reading more about your processes and the reasons for your choices. As a potential customer, I appreciate your enthusiasm for the special qualities of the surfaces and the pleasure of their tactility (whoa, spell check says it IS a word!).

I would like, in future posts, to learn more about your research into your historical predecessors.

And on a personal note, most of the glass pipes around here have an aesthetic range of awful to ugly.

Mea, I'll try not to get carried away with the photos.  Unfortunately, it appears that my theme does not allow me to post full posts without some serious php hacking, so I may have to wait on that.  Time is currently short.

Rae, Thanks for the suggestion!  I did a little post tonight on the inspiration I derive from pre-Columbian pipes.  Yes, some glass pipes are pretty awful-- Sturgeon's Law applies to this, as it does to most things.  But I have to be grateful for their recent prominence, because that's what lured me back into the field, in large part.  Plus, I've been treated very generously by some young glassmakers, who were pretty selfless in helping someone who hoped to be a direct competitor.  I'd left that whole culture long ago, and needed lots of pointers on how the market has evolved.

Joseph, I've been surprised by how well the shop is doing, very suddenly.  If this keeps up, I may not need to market anywhere else.  I actually sold a 60 dollar mug the other day.  I can remember when a 6 dollar mug would keep me in macaroni and cheese for a week.

Doris, thank you for the encouragement. I'm going to try to add a post most days.  They won't always be profound, but I'll try to have at least one somewhat interesting idea in each.

I suggest viewing the orginal movie the blob as that is where all blobs started. If I recall steve Macqueen was in it.

Mark

I had to read this like 3 times before i got it. my brain isn't what it used to be. lol

Beware of the Blog? Dang, Mark, now I've got that song stuck . . .!

When I was in 5th grade I dressed for a Halloween Party as The Blob (yes, that was the year). My costume was a bunch of black and blue crepe paper streamers tied in a topknot on my head. I spent the whole party worrying that the streamers would get wet and stain my best friend's mother's upholstery :(

Folks, I've made some changes.  I couldn't figure out how to have full-length posts in the theme I started with, so I switched themes.  I like having the full post, thanks for recommending it.

Mea, I'm still getting carried away with photos, I'm afraid, but I'll try to do better.  I think it's partly because I'm very visually oriented, and like to tell stories with pictures more than words, which is weird considering my history. Today I posted a number of images from other art forms I've pursued, as well as a bibliography of my science fiction publications.

Here's an example:
