Terracotta Tile Mural

Recommended Posts

The final version was printed and cut on Friday morning.  The tiles have been drying for 10 and 17 days, in two batches.

Saturday morning at 10:15 saw the first of 88 tiles being scribed/etched/gouged out by the fifty-six 13-18 year olds at a scout event called Lucky 13.  It is organised by the Explorers (14-18) and is intended to persuade the 13 year olds to stay at scouts and then move up to Explorers at 14.

8 hours later, the 66th tile was done and tomorrow will see some of the adults finish the task.

The theme for the event was "medieval", so we compared the modern "digital camera/phone/facebook/instagram" to the ancient "cave paintings/paintings/tomb carving/bayeux tapestry/floor and wall tiles."

An introduction to a different use of clay than most imagine.

what a great project for them.  where will it be installed?  i hope it will be somewhere they can take their grandchildren to show their work.

(glad to see that the young man with the broom does have feet.)  what is that between the pig and the ducks?

It's a pole lathe.  (Medieval wood-turning.)

We had a fantastic weekend.  Still need to catch some of the adults and get the last few tiles done.

We're hoping to install it (indoors) on the wall of the building where the Explorers meet.  It will be low-fired, no glaze.  I can't face the risk of anything more, hence tiles, not pots or mugs or anything requiring glaze or high-firing.
